Movie Review: ‘Cake’ is a believable drama film executed to perfection

The family drama film Cake premiered in Pakistan yesterday and it was one delicious treat, I must say. Starring Aamina Sheikh, Sanam Saeed and Adnan Malik in the lead roles, Cake is a film about a dysfunctional family that unites under grave circumstances. Directed by Asim Abbasi, the movie is multidimensional in its approach to bringing a rejuvenating experience to the viewers. It was really a dream come true to capture the long dead essence of Pakistani cinema with this film. Cake was put together phenomenally; the acting was stellar especially of Aamina Sheikh who stood out. Her command on acting is brilliant and she manages to execute her roles brilliantly in almost every project. But her performance was one of a kind in this film alone.

Sheikh amalgamated Zarine’s character really well and made it look believable on screen. Although the character has her occasional mood swings and outbursts but that is what makes her personality special. Without a doubt, Cake is what an ideal Pakistani film should be; less theatrics and thorough consistency in view of direction, visuals and acting. In my opinion, Cake is probably the first mainstream Pakistani film that has not compromised on content and quality unlike many haphazard movies created in the recent past. It has a fixed identity and a progressive storyline which are essential components in every film.

It is mostly impulsive scriptwriting and poor direction that have done Pakistan’s cinema more harm than good. Perhaps filmmakers should take their time in making a movie to achieve an intense impact. Director Asim Abbasi has created a masterpiece that almost every educated Pakistani can relate to but more importantly, reminisce in the long run; what corroborates the success of a film are memories that people take with them and Cake manages to achieve that feat. For those who do not know, Asim Abbasi is also the recipient of Best Director for Cake at the recent UK Asian Film Festival. The accolade is an evidence of hard work and commitment.

What I would say to an average Pakistani is, book your seats and watch Cake while you can. It is perhaps the only Pakistani film I have come across that is not stereotypical. As far as the movie goes, I will not spoil the plot for the readers and moviegoers because I want them to experience the drive of the film, and enjoy it as they would a delicious, multi layered cake! Most mainstream films are known for their box office earnings but movies that really matter are recognized for their content and brilliance. I commend the filmmaker and actors for investing in this film and making it a rare cinematic experience.

Why I Will Not Be Celebrating Pakistan’s Independence | By Haider Rifaat

Pakistan does not bleed green anymore; it bleeds red.  I know what this country stood for in the past; freedom, happiness, a brighter future for our children, but it does no longer. What is there to celebrate about? Despite Pakistan being freed from a tangled web of hypocrisy and hatred, this country has not lived up to its strength. Millions of Pakistanis gallivant off to celebrate Pakistan’s independence each year and discount the victims of hate crimes, social injustices, domestic terrorism and desolation. A nation should only celebrate its independence if it has lived up its motto. We have lashed out the slogan ‘Unity, Faith & Discipline’ all the way.

We have taken Quaid-e-Azam’s motto for granted for decades and nothing has been done to relinquish its core essence. Pakistan is regressing day by day and the bitter reality remains disclosed; hypocrisy and blatant lies. As a nation, we are well aware of Pakistan’s struggle in view of political, social and economic unrest. Despite that, no one cares to rectify the mistakes. My country might have green and white embroidered on its flag; but hypocrites running this nation do not deserve to raise the flag in the air. Pakistan has become a breeding ground for terrorists. This country never stood for democracy. None of the previous governments have been answerable to the people. They have only accomplished their own agendas. While children are abducted each year, the authorities and responsible agencies hold their fire for tons of cash to get the job done. Sadly, Pakistan has been exploited, misused and subjugated all these years.

My home country is not the same anymore. It has become a money-hungry, corrupt and hypocritical nation. After completing four years, a new government assumes the office and the monotonous routine continues to blemish the identity of Pakistan. The colors green and white have been misrepresented these past decades. There is nothing holy or sacred about Pakistan. Islam is misinterpreted while minorities are murdered each day for practicing their religion. There is no freedom whatsoever. Honor killings, rape, child abuse, hypocrisy and poverty are on an all-time rise. Similarly, the elite class bathes in black money and so does the media. You know who is bound to celebrate independence? Those who have seen their country blossom each year, not wither.

The PM’s presence in the office is of no use by the end of the day. Nawaz Sharif’s agenda is his own. It is not for Pakistan’s progression. Our government has lied to us all these years and we still haven’t learned from the past. Pakistanis are no different. They have assumed a similar role as our government, opting for paths that are dark and gloomy. The sad reality, however is that we have no regrets. Pakistan was dead a long time ago when the Army Public School in Peshawar was attacked by homegrown terrorists. Pakistan lost faith in its people when Osama Bin Laden was found in Abbottabad, Pakistan. We do not deserve Pakistan. For me, it is a utopic fantasy. I dream about Pakistan each day and wonder, who am I, really? Am I Pakistani? Pakistan has distanced itself from all of us and we deserve it.

Sarah Michelle Gellar To Guest Star In Comedy ‘Those Who Can’t’ | By Haider Rifaat

Gear up SMG fans! The 38-year old actress who starred in The Crazy Ones (2012) and Ringer (2011), both shows that were axed by different TV networks is taking the high road with a guest starring role in the new comedy Those Who Can’t. Being a huge fan of the former ‘Buffy’ star, the actress will grace our screens once again with a comedic role.

As quoted and pictured in SMGFrance.Net, a fan website dedicated to Gellar, the actress was seen behind the scenes shooting for an episode for the new comedy series. SMG will reportedly star in the second episode of the show’s first season.

During her one year hiatus, Gellar devoted her time to several charities and awareness programs including No Child Hungry but after a long wait, the actress is back on track. But the real question is, when will SMG return to television in a show that completely centers on her? Well, we’d just have to wait and watch!

Will Lifetime’s ‘Devious Maids’ Be Renewed For Season Four? | By Haider Rifaat

The third season of the thrilling Lifetime soap opera Devious Maids will conclude next week on August 24th, 2015. The show stars Roselyn Sanchez, Judy Reyes, Ana Ortiz and Dania Ramirez as four ambitious Latina maids working for some of the most affluent families in Los Angeles, California. But these four ladies harbor many dirty secrets of the households they represent.

The first season of the show focused on Flora Hernandez’s murder case. The maids made it their mission to find out who the real killer really was.

The second season had a lot going on. There was an obsessed ‘maid’ lover who also happened to be a killer. The season ended its run with a cliffhanger – a major character got shot on Rosie’s wedding ceremony.

In the current season three of Devious Maids, the center of focus was the Stappord family who had recently adopted a Mexican girl, Katy. It was later revealed in the last few episodes that she had witnessed her father’s murder and that a gang of goons were after her.

Additionally, a new maid was introduced this season, Blanca Alvarez (played by Naya Rivera) who was yet again murdered by an anonymous killer, and now we will finally uncover who the actual killer is in next week’s season finale.

Speaking of ratings, the current season of the show generated a million viewers per episode facing a downfall as compared to the last two seasons. But the real question is, will Lifetime renew Devious Maids for a fourth season? I sure hope so! Although the ratings have not been so impressive this year, the show continues to surprise us with its writing and acting. Let’s keep those fingers crossed!
